April 29, 2010 by   Filed under Barking Dogs

So you are sick and tired of dogs constant howling and barking and now looking for tips on stopping barking dogs. Before we begin, you need to understand the fact that dogs are using “barking” as a means to communicate with the world outside. If dogs are just “shut off” from the world outside them, they don’t have any other way of communicating. Unfortunately, some dogs do it more than others and that’s when it becomes annoying.

To human ears dog’s barking is simply frustrating and in our opinion totally unnecessary. Although it is not possible to completely stop dogs from barking (its like stopping a child from speaking anything), but with proper training program this problem can be reduced considerably. Also understand the fact that some barking is actually good, you would surely want your dogs to bark when they need to alert you of something doubtful or perhaps of some danger to you or your property.

The most important part of training dogs to stop barking is not to start screaming at them when they bark, asking them to just “shut-up”, this sort of behavior on dog owners part will increase their barking habits.
Although barking is a pretty annoying issue but its after all a dog’s way to communicate.

Listed below are the top 6 tips on stopping barking dogs -:

1 – Use a clean squirt gun to squirt some water on dogs when they are barking.

2 – Roll up a newspaper and hit it on your palm, the noise made will generally work to calm the dogs, however, this method is going to work only with puppies.

3 – Train your dogs to be quiet on command. Say “no” to them, when you want them to stop barking.

4 – Reward your dogs when they obey you and stop barking.

5 – If you need to leave dogs alone at home, give them some good dog chew toys so that they don’t feel bored alone at home and start barking out of boredom.

6 – Don’t yell at your dogs. Training dogs to stop barking is a slow process and takes time for dogs to learn. Don’t expect your dogs to start obeying you from day one.
