  10. docchat says:

Can you go into detail on how you would do it?

  11. pamiieh says:

I don’t think you are training her as she should be trained since the dog doesn’t hear the command, but only wants the candy.. Thats why she couldn’t stop putting the light on (she still wanted the sweets and you did not even say “light”). The same thing with the retrieving. At a sudden moment she doesn’t get it back, but is waiting for the cookie..

The treat acts as a secondary reinforcement. The “good girl” is the primary reinforcement. There is nothing wrong with training this way. We can be much quicker with our words than we can with treats.

What type of treats are you using? I’m having trouble finding one that my pup likes and that he can eat quickly.

  14. docchat says:

The tapping is basically teaching the puppy to continue holding until she is giving the cue “give”. So, no matter what happens while holding… whether we’re walking, I’m tapping on the dumb bell, moving my hand in front of her face, holding/shaking the dumb bell as it’s in her mouth… she continues to hold. The only time she is to release it, is on the “give” cue. It’s basically proofing the hold.

What’s the purpose of tapping while holding the dumbell just curious?
