How to Crate Train a Puppy – The Right Crate

When your puppy is young is the best opportunity to crate train your puppy. A cage is the most important and useful tool you can buy for training and managing a dog of any size or age. The first thing you need to do is selecting the right kennel for your dog. The perfect crate should be big enough for your puppy to stand up, lie down and turn around comfortably. This will give the puppy a place to lie down and sleep and also stand up and move around to stretch, but not enough room to go potty and still have room to sleep. Dogs will not potty where they lie down and sleep. Choose the right size cage for your dog is easy, choose a cage by the size your puppy will grow into. If your dog will be a large dog as a adult by a large cage and block off part of the cage until they need more room.

How to crate train a puppy by leaving the door open and encourage your dog into the kennel with treats or a play toy they like to play with. Do not stuff a unwilling or struggling puppy into the cage. When your dog goes into the cage by him or her self, give them lots of praise and make sure they are not scared by being in the cage. Do not yell or punish them if they come right back out of the cage, just offer them more treats and praise to go back into the kennel. Take it slow and make sure your puppy feels safe and secure in their new cage. Remember the kennel should be a den, not a prison cell. No one should be allowed to tease your puppy when they are in the cage. Do not use the cage as a place to punishment or to settle a dog down.

If used properly a kennel is a great tool to help you and your puppy to have a long and happy relationship.
