8 hours? No dog should be asked to hold it that long – I don’t care how old they are. Just like humans, sometimes when you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go. And sometimes you wanna go but it takes a little while – rushing them isn’t helpful. Giving them a routine and having a lot of patience is the key. I do agree with the “code” word. My other dog would sniff, mark and track all day and forget to potty every time I took him out if I let him.
