Dalmatian puppy training -Scent Discrimination-
July 24, 2010 by Dog Trainer Filed under Puppy Training
Shane, at 11 weeks old, learning scent discrimination, in which he has to find the one metal article that has my scent on it, picking it out of 15 other identical articles that were not handled by me. This is only his second training session for this, the first only being earlier today for about 15 minutes. The Scent Discrimination exercise is in the Utility level of AKC obedience competition.
great thanks =)
I started with only a couple D-Rings, 2 or 3and they where all scented by me. I encouraged him to sniff them, and when he did, I praised & gave a treat. Eventually he associated that smelling my scent is what gets him the treat. So then you take away one scented D-Ring and put in an un-scented one. He will remember what got him the reward and only be interested in the scented ones. You slowley take away all but 1 scented article and add more un-scented ones when they have a clear understanding
how does the dog begin to understand what do you want her to do ?
how does she know the you want her to find the scented one ?
cool (:
I’ve never heard of scent discrimination training… My mom’s an obedience trainer and such, and this is a new one for me!
